US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Manila, Philippines, on Wednesday (July 22). The high-level talks took place against the backdrop of growing instability in the Middle East and increasing geopolitical tensions across the Indo-Pacific.
The meeting marked one of the latest direct diplomatic engagements between Washington and Beijing, as both powers continue to manage strategic competition while maintaining channels of communication on global and regional issues.
Rubio and Wang Yi held bilateral discussions during a series of ASEAN-related ministerial meetings attended by dialogue partners, including the United States and China. Their meeting came as international attention remains focused on escalating conflict in the Middle East, raising concerns over global economic stability, energy supplies, and international trade routes.
According to CNN Indonesia, the two foreign ministers discussed bilateral relations as well as a range of international issues of mutual concern. During his participation in the ASEAN meetings, Rubio reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting freedom of navigation and adherence to international law in the Indo-Pacific. Meanwhile, China reiterated its support for resolving maritime disputes through dialogue and negotiations with ASEAN member states, including efforts to accelerate discussions on a Code of Conduct for the South China Sea.
As of now, no detailed outcomes from the Rubio-Wang bilateral meeting have been officially disclosed. Nevertheless, the talks are widely viewed as part of ongoing efforts by the world's two largest powers to maintain communication amid increasingly complex geopolitical challenges.
