ASEAN NETWORK NEWS | Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul reached a series of strategic agreements during their bilateral meeting at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on August 3. The meeting marked the Second Leaders' Consultation since Indonesia and Thailand elevated their ties to a Strategic Partnership in 2025.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation and enhancing regional stability through closer collaboration across economic, security, and people-to-people sectors.
A key outcome of the meeting was the adoption of the Indonesia–Thailand Strategic Partnership Roadmap 2026–2030, which will serve as a framework for bilateral cooperation over the next five years. The roadmap focuses on strengthening collaboration in security, trade and investment, food and energy security, the digital economy, and human resource development.
In the economic sector, Indonesia and Thailand agreed to raise their bilateral trade target to approximately US$22 billion (around Rp359 trillion). Both governments pledged to improve market access, encourage greater investment, and reduce trade barriers to support the ambitious target.
The two countries also agreed to deepen cooperation in food security and energy, including agricultural development, food commodity trade, and initiatives supporting a sustainable energy transition.
In education, Indonesia and Thailand signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to expand academic cooperation through student exchanges, joint research, and capacity-building programs. The leaders also agreed to strengthen collaboration in the tourism sector.
On security, both sides committed to enhancing cooperation in combating transnational crimes, including human trafficking, narcotics smuggling, cybercrime, and other cross-border criminal activities.
Beyond bilateral issues, President Prabowo and Prime Minister Anutin discussed regional and global developments, emphasizing the importance of maintaining ASEAN centrality in addressing regional challenges, including the situation in Myanmar and broader geopolitical dynamics in Southeast Asia.
Following the official talks, President Prabowo personally accompanied Prime Minister Anutin to Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base before the Thai leader's departure, underscoring the close ties between the two countries.
The agreements reached during the meeting represent a significant step in implementing the Indonesia–Thailand Strategic Partnership established in 2025. Both governments are expected to follow up through the implementation of the newly adopted roadmap, the education MoU, and continued coordination among relevant ministries and agencies.
