ASEAN NETWORK NEWS| Two new lakes have formed after flash floods struck areas along the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, 2026. The lakes were created when ice, rocks, mud and other debris blocked river channels following the collapse of glacial material in the Himalayan region.
Authorities in Nepal and China are monitoring the situation because rising water levels behind the natural barriers could trigger further flooding if the barriers collapse. Rescue teams have also been warned to stay away from areas considered at risk.
The flash floods caused significant damage in parts of the Himalayan region, affecting roads, bridges, settlements and other infrastructure.
