ASEANNETWORKNEWS| Indonesia’s newly appointed Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Christiawan Nasir said the government will continue pursuing Indonesia’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2029–2030 term.
Arrmanatha made the statement after being inaugurated by President Prabowo Subianto at the State Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, October 1, 2026. He replaced Sugiono, who was appointed Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs on the same day.
Arrmanatha said the change in foreign minister would not alter the fundamental direction of Indonesia’s foreign policy. He emphasized that Indonesia’s foreign policy would continue to be guided by the Constitution and the principle of an independent and active foreign policy.
“My task here is simply to continue what Mr. Sugiono has been doing, who is now the Coordinating Minister,” Arrmanatha said, as quoted by ANTARA.
He said Indonesia would continue to pursue its national interests while contributing to regional stability and global security.
One of the priorities is Indonesia’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UNSC for the 2029–2030 term. Arrmanatha said the bid reflects Indonesia’s intention to contribute to international peace and security and strengthen multilateral cooperation.
“We will once again nominate ourselves as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2029–2030 period,” Arrmanatha said.
Arrmanatha is not new to multilateral diplomacy. Before becoming foreign minister, he served as Deputy Foreign Minister and held several diplomatic positions related to the United Nations.
His previous assignments included serving as Indonesia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in New York. He also served as Vice President of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
His experience in multilateral diplomacy is expected to support Indonesia’s efforts to advance its interests in international forums.
Indonesia’s candidacy for a non-permanent UNSC seat for the 2029–2030 term has been included in the Foreign Ministry’s agenda for Indonesia’s candidacies in international organizations.
According to a Foreign Ministry document, the election for the UNSC seat is scheduled to take place in New York in June 2028.
If elected, Indonesia would serve as one of the non-permanent members of the Security Council, the UN body responsible for addressing matters concerning international peace and security.
Arrmanatha also emphasized that Indonesia would continue strengthening multilateralism and promoting reforms to the international system.
The new foreign minister’s statement indicates that the government intends to maintain continuity in Indonesia’s foreign policy despite the change in leadership at the Foreign Ministry.
The appointment of Arrmanatha was part of President Prabowo Subianto’s latest Cabinet reshuffle. Sugiono, who previously served as foreign minister, was appointed Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs.
Indonesia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2029–2030 term is now among the diplomatic priorities that Arrmanatha Nasir will continue as foreign minister.
According to the Foreign Ministry, the election is scheduled for June 2028 in New York. The Indonesian government has said the candidacy is part of its broader efforts to contribute to international peace and security and strengthen multilateral cooperation.
