ASEAN NETWORK NEWS | PALANGKA RAYA, Indonesia — The Indonesian government is stepping up efforts to tackle forest and land fires in Central Kalimantan by preparing weather modification operations and aerial firefighting missions using helicopters equipped for water bombing.
The measures aim to contain the spread of wildfires, reduce the risk of recurring fires, and limit the impact of haze on communities in affected areas.
Weather modification operations were scheduled for October 15–16, 2026, as part of efforts to increase the likelihood of rainfall. The additional precipitation is expected to help moisten dry land and support firefighting efforts.
Aircraft supporting the operation were planned to depart from Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, with deployment arrangements taking into account atmospheric conditions and operational requirements.
Weather Modification to Help Reduce Wildfire Risks
Weather modification is among the measures being prepared to address dry conditions in Central Kalimantan. By encouraging rainfall when atmospheric conditions are suitable, the operation aims to increase soil moisture and help reduce the risk of fires spreading.
The success of such operations depends on weather patterns, the availability of suitable clouds, and atmospheric conditions at the time of deployment.
Weather modification is intended to complement ground-based firefighting and other prevention measures rather than serve as a standalone solution.
Water-Bombing Helicopters Prepared for Deployment to Kuala Pembuang
In addition to weather modification, the government is preparing aerial firefighting operations using water-bombing helicopters.
A helicopter previously stationed in South Kalimantan was planned to be relocated to Kuala Pembuang, in Seruyan Regency, Central Kalimantan. The relocation was intended to support firefighting operations in affected areas, with visibility conditions considered in operational planning.
Water bombing involves releasing large quantities of water from helicopters over fire hotspots to help suppress flames, particularly in areas that are difficult for ground crews to access.
Combined with ground operations and weather modification, aerial firefighting is expected to strengthen efforts to contain forest and land fires. Its effectiveness, however, depends on field conditions, fire intensity, and weather developments.
Cross-Agency Coordination Remains Essential
Effective wildfire management requires coordination among the central government, regional administrations, and firefighting teams operating on the ground.
Ground-based suppression, hotspot monitoring, and land-wetting operations remain important components of the response. These measures can help control active fires and reduce the risk of flames reigniting after initial suppression.
Coordinated operations are particularly important in areas where dry vegetation and difficult terrain can complicate firefighting efforts.
Government Seeks to Reduce the Impact of Haze
Forest and land fires can generate haze that reduces air quality, disrupts daily activities, and poses risks to public health. Strengthening firefighting operations is therefore an important part of efforts to limit the environmental and health impacts of wildfires.
Through weather modification, helicopter water bombing, and coordination among relevant agencies, the government aims to contain fires in Central Kalimantan and reduce the risk of further outbreaks.
The measures are expected to complement ground-based firefighting, fire monitoring, and land-wetting activities as authorities work to protect communities and limit the spread of forest and land fires.
Editorial note: The weather modification operation was scheduled for October 15–16, 2026. As those dates have passed, the implementation status and latest developments should be verified before publication.
