ASEAN NETWORK NEWS | A total of 29 countries have formally agreed to establish a new global organization dedicated to international cooperation on artificial intelligence (AI).
The initiative was announced as part of the AI Alliance’s expansion into Indonesia, a move designed to accelerate responsible, open-source AI development and strengthen the country’s digital ecosystem.
Founded by IBM and Meta, the AI Alliance is a global non-profit consortium focused on open, inclusive, and accountable AI. With this latest expansion, the Alliance now spans 29 countries and includes 195 member organizations, complementing its existing regional networks in Asia Pacific, including Thailand, Japan, and India.
The move comes amid growing recognition of AI’s economic potential for Indonesia. AI is projected to contribute up to USD 366 billion — roughly IDR 6,156 trillion — to Indonesia’s GDP by 2030.
Despite rising adoption, challenges remain. A recent IBM CEO study found that while 61% of Indonesian companies are actively deploying AI agents and plan to expand their use, only 27% report achieving the expected return on investment. Other key hurdles include limited access to skilled talent, gaps in digital infrastructure, and concerns around data protection, privacy, bias, fairness, transparency, cybersecurity, and accountability.
The AI Alliance’s presence in Indonesia aims to address these issues by promoting open-source AI solutions, broadening access to the technology, and maximizing its national potential. Universitas Ciputra is listed as the first Indonesian member of the Alliance, with several other institutions currently in the membership application process.
