China Urges Thailand to Deport Journalist as Rights Groups Warn of Persecution

ASEAN NETWORK NEWS | The Chinese government has formally requested that Thailand deport Chinese investigative journalist Bai Zhaodong, who is currently being held in immigration detention in Bangkok. The request has raised serious concerns among international human rights organizations, which warn that Bai could face political persecution, torture, and other human rights violations if returned to China.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF)
and Safeguard Defenders have urged Thai authorities to reject Beijing's extradition request. The organizations argue that Bai became a target after reporting on alleged corruption involving Chinese government officials and believe the criminal charges against him are politically motivated to silence his investigative journalism.

Bai has reportedly been detained by Thailand's immigration authorities since January 2026. Chinese officials maintain that the extradition request is based on allegations of extortion and bribery, insisting that the case is a criminal matter unrelated to press freedom or Bai's journalistic activities.

Human rights groups contend that Thailand has an obligation under international law not to return individuals to countries where they face a substantial risk of torture or persecution. They have called on Bangkok to resist diplomatic pressure from Beijing and uphold the principle of non-refoulement, which prohibits the forced return of individuals to places where their lives, freedom, or fundamental rights may be at risk.

The case has drawn renewed international attention to Thailand's handling of Chinese dissidents. It follows previous criticism over the deportation of Uyghur asylum seekers and other Chinese nationals, with rights advocates warning that such actions could expose vulnerable individuals to persecution upon their return to China.
