Dutch Media Reports Jakarta Erupts in Celebration After Indonesia Wins ASEAN Cup

ASEANNETWORKNEWS|
Jakarta erupted in celebration after Indonesia defeated Thailand in a penalty shootout to win the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on Monday (October 5, 2026).

The victory drew attention from Dutch media, which reported on the atmosphere in Jakarta and Indonesia’s historic return to the top of senior international football after a long wait for a major trophy.

Indonesia secured the ASEAN Cup title after a dramatic final against Thailand. The match ended 2-2 after 120 minutes before Indonesia prevailed 4-2 in the penalty shootout.

Dutch publication Voetbal Primeur described the celebrations in Jakarta following Indonesia’s victory, using the headline, “Jakarta erupts in euphoria, Thailand powerless: Indonesia wins the ASEAN Cup after a fierce battle.”

The publication also highlighted the intensity of the final, noting that Thailand continued to compete with 10 players and had opportunities to win before Indonesia ultimately secured the trophy through penalties.

Another Dutch outlet, NOS, focused on the historical significance of Indonesia’s achievement. It reported that the title marked Indonesia’s first senior international trophy since 1991.

NOS also highlighted the presence of several Indonesian players with links to the Dutch Eredivisie, reflecting the connection between Indonesian football and the Netherlands.

Dutch media also paid particular attention to Dean James, who plays for Go Ahead Eagles.

James scored Indonesia’s opening goal from a free kick in the 84th minute before Thailand equalized three minutes later. He subsequently converted his penalty during the shootout.

Dutch newspaper De Stentor reported on James’ contribution in the final and noted his role in Indonesia’s historic triumph.

The final remained tightly contested during extra time. Thailand took the lead in the second period of extra time before Elkan Baggott restored Indonesia’s level, sending the match to a penalty shootout.

Goalkeeper Emil Audero then became one of Indonesia’s key figures by saving a Thailand penalty, helping the Garuda secure the 4-2 shootout victory.

The victory prompted celebrations in several parts of Jakarta. Supporters gathered around areas including Bundaran HI to celebrate Indonesia’s championship after the final whistle.

The triumph also attracted international attention beyond the Netherlands, with media outlets in several countries reporting on Indonesia’s achievement and the end of its long wait for a senior international title.

Indonesia’s victory over Thailand not only secured the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup title but also attracted considerable attention from Dutch and other international media. Dutch reports focused both on the celebrations in Jakarta and on the contributions of Indonesian players with connections to the Netherlands.
