ASEAN NETWORK NEWS | On July 15, military representatives from Cambodia and Thailand held an urgent informal meeting at the Choam-Sa Ngam border gate to address and defuse rising border tensions. The Cambodian delegation, led by Major General Neth Narong, and the Thai delegation, headed by Major General Kamphaknak Waphanphu, utilized the meeting to clear up misunderstandings and seek peaceful resolutions to recent security challenges.
During the talks, Cambodia strongly urged Thailand to halt unilateral border activities, such as road construction and the installation of barbed wire fences. They emphasized the critical need for the Joint Boundary Committee (JBC) to expedite formal land surveying and border demarcation based on their prior agreements.
Addressing recent reports of shootings and explosions in the area, Cambodian officials called for a joint investigation to verify the facts, avoid further misunderstandings, and prevent such incidents from happening again. Furthermore, both nations agreed on the importance of combating fake news and provocative misinformation that could incite hostility between their citizens.
The meeting concluded with Cambodia reaffirming its commitment to existing bilateral peace agreements and joint declarations, emphasizing its desire for a fair, long-term resolution grounded in international law.
