Middle East Tensions Escalate: US-Iran Clashes and Saudi-Houthi Conflicts Flare Up

ASEAN NETWORK NEWS |
The situation in the Middle East is becoming increasingly volatile. Simultaneous conflicts—renewed exchanges of fire between the United States and Iran in the Strait of Hormuz, alongside fresh clashes between Saudi Arabia and Houthi rebels in Yemen—are sparking fears of a broader regional war.

The latest confrontation in the Strait of Hormuz erupted on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, when Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy engaged in a shootout with US military forces. This incident has severely heightened tensions in the critical waterway, which serves as a global lifeline for energy trade. Iranian state television and local news agencies reported loud explosions in Bandar Abbas, surrounding islands, and the Sirik region, indicating heavy armed contact in the Gulf waters.

In response, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that its military operations were designed to neutralize Iran's ability to threaten commercial vessels passing through the Strait. In addition to air and sea strikes, US forces have tightened their blockade on ships entering and leaving Iranian ports. The Pentagon has reportedly deployed over 20 warships and hundreds of fighter jets to the region, placing all American forces on high alert.

US President Donald Trump announced the reinstatement of the naval blockade on Iranian ports, warning of targeted strikes on Iran's power plants and energy facilities if Tehran refuses to return to the negotiating table. "I will save the energy facilities for last, but ultimately we will strike them. Next week it will be power plants, the week after that, bridges, unless they sit at the negotiating table," Trump threatened in a statement to Fox News.

Consequently, Iran has once again closed the Strait of Hormuz following the recent skirmishes, further unraveling a fragile ceasefire agreed upon in June. Amidst this escalation, the Iranian military announced early Wednesday that it had launched drone strikes against a US military base in Azraq, Jordan. The IRGC also claimed to have targeted military storage facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait, with Kuwait's military reporting that its air defense systems were actively repelling Iranian drones and that resulting fires had been extinguished. The Pentagon has yet to issue an official response regarding the attack in Jordan.
